She’s a cinema pioneer with an incredible list of firsts: Euzhan Palcy was the first female director to win one of France’s prestigious César awards, the first Black woman to have a film produced by a major Hollywood studio and the only woman to have directed Marlon Brando. Born on the French island of Martinique, Euzhan Palcy fell in love with cinema but realized Black people were missing from the screen. She went on to make history with the award-winning “Sugar Cane Alley” and anti-apartheid film “A Dry White Season”. She spoke to Alison Sargent about the fight to produce her films, paving the way for a new generation and the lack of recognition in her home country of France.
